GUI guidelines

Hello,

I have an unusual request, for everybody who is reading this message.

Is there any guideline you follow when you have to set up a GUI ? Is there any documentation, books, guidelines, principles you follow ?

I know this may not be the right forum to post this question in but I would like to know an opinion of TMS who provides many GUI components and from its users too.

Although, whether MS is the authority on GUI design is debatable. Just look at windows 8 and office 2013 - some terrible GUI  ideas there !

Personally, I copy ideas from other software which I like to use myself. I also feel it's very important to implement shortcut keys so desktop users can become more productive (tablet and mobile are a different ball game of course)
