I realize that it is a limitation of Excel that they do not auto-adjust row height for wrapped text in merged cells. I wonder whether FlexCel offers any support for discovering the actual height the rouw would need?

Have you looked as the section "Autofitting Merged cells" in UsingFexCelAPI.pdf?
While indeed Excel won't autofit merged cells, FlexCel can autofit them.You need to set the row to fixed height, or else when you open the file in Excel the row will be autofiited back to a single line. But other than that, you can autofit fine merged cells with FlexCel, and there are even options about what row to grow if the merged cell has more than 1 row. This is all explained in the mentioned document.
