I've noticed that there are some properties: DataString, DataInteger, DataBoolean, DataObject and DBKey, for Columns, Groups, Nodes and NodeValues. I can't find any reference to them in the developers guide. Are they just properties that I can use to store my own values for particular nodes/columns etc or do they have any predefined use?

The Data* properties are properties you can use inside your application to store your own data.
They do not have a predefined purpose.
